The Threat of Barium Sulfate Scale
In oilfield operations, particularly during water flooding or secondary recovery, the mixing of incompatible waters (like injection water high in sulfates and formation water high in barium) often leads to the rapid precipitation of barium sulfate (BaSO4).
Unlike calcium carbonate, barium sulfate scale is incredibly hard, extremely insoluble, and virtually impossible to remove with standard acid treatments once it forms. Therefore, chemical inhibition is the only practical defense.
Key Scale Inhibitors for Barium Sulfate
A reliable barium sulfate scale inhibitor oilfield water treatment program relies heavily on specialized phosphonates and polymers.
1. DTPMP
DTPMP (Diethylene Triamine Penta (Methylene Phosphonic Acid)) is widely regarded as one of the most effective inhibitors for barium sulfate. It offers excellent chelation properties and is highly tolerant of high salinity and high-temperature environments commonly found downhole.
2. HEDP
HEDP is also used in oilfield applications, often in combination with DTPMP, to provide a synergistic effect that controls a broader spectrum of scale types, including calcium and strontium scales.
Application Methods
Scale inhibitors in the oilfield are typically applied via two main methods:
- Continuous Injection: Chemicals are continuously pumped into the wellbore or surface facilities to maintain a constant protective concentration.
- Squeeze Treatments: A concentrated pill of the inhibitor is pumped (squeezed) directly into the rock formation. The chemical slowly desorbs over time, providing long-lasting protection (often months) against scale formation as the fluids are produced.
Monitoring and Optimization
Due to the severe consequences of barium sulfate scaling, continuous monitoring of residual inhibitor concentrations in the produced water is essential. If the concentration drops below the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), another squeeze treatment must be scheduled immediately.
