Product Mechanism & Performance

Polyacrylic Acid acts through three synergistic mechanisms: threshold scale inhibition, crystal lattice distortion, and electrostatic particle dispersion. It prevents precipitation of calcium salts even at low sub-stoichiometric concentrations.

In recirculating cooling loops and reverse osmosis membranes, PAA adsorbs onto micro-crystallites of CaCO₃ and CaSO₄, causing structural deformities that prevent them from adhering to heat-transfer metal surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions: Polyacrylic Acid (PAA 50%)

Expert technical answers on dosing, chemistry, handling, and application performance.

Q1. What is Polyacrylic Acid (PAA 50%) and how does it prevent scale in water systems?

Polyacrylic Acid (PAA 50%, CAS 9003-01-4) is a low molecular weight anionic acrylic homopolymer that prevents scale formation via three mechanisms: threshold scale inhibition, crystal lattice distortion, and electrostatic dispersion of calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, and mineral silt.

Q2. What is the recommended dosage of PAA 50% in cooling towers and boilers?

For open recirculating cooling towers, the typical active dosage is 5.0 to 20.0 ppm. In low to medium pressure steam boilers (<40 bar), recommended dosing is 10.0 to 30.0 ppm. For reverse osmosis pre-treatment antiscalant blending, 2.0 to 6.0 ppm active is standard.

Q3. Is ZEELCHEM™ 1000 Polyacrylic Acid compatible with oxidizing biocides like chlorine?

Yes, ZEELCHEM™ 1000 exhibits good chemical stability in the presence of standard oxidizing biocides (chlorine, sodium hypochlorite, bromine, and chlorine dioxide) within customary cooling tower residual ranges (0.2 to 1.0 ppm free chlorine).
