Sulfonated Electrostatic Repulsion Dynamics

The bulky sulfonate groups on AMPS remain fully ionized even at low pH and in high-salinity brines. They impart strong negative zeta potential charges to colloidal particles, keeping calcium phosphate, iron silt, and zinc flocs permanently dispersed.

Unlike ordinary homopolymers that fail in the presence of soluble iron (>1 ppm Fe), AA/AMPS prevents catastrophic iron-phosphate deposition on heat transfer tubes.

Frequently Asked Questions: AA/AMPS Copolymer

Expert technical answers on dosing, chemistry, handling, and application performance.

Q1. What is AA/AMPS Copolymer and why is it considered the best phosphate dispersant?

AA/AMPS (Acrylic Acid / 2-Acrylamido-2-Methylpropane Sulfonic Acid, CAS 40623-75-3) incorporates strongly polarized sulfonate groups that deliver unmatched dispersion of calcium phosphate, zinc hydroxide, and iron oxide.

Q2. What is the typical dosage of AA/AMPS in industrial cooling towers?

In high-stress cooling towers using phosphate or zinc treatment programs, typical continuous dosing is 8.0 to 20.0 ppm active.

Q3. What is the active concentration and pH of ZEELCHEM™ 3100?

ZEELCHEM™ 3100 contains ≥ 40.0% active solid copolymer with specific gravity 1.15–1.22 g/cm³ and pH (1% aqueous) 2.5–4.5.
